Men who define Mass

Rarely do movies give you a sense of fulfillment when you walk out of the screen and Lucifer gave me that. It was the first Malayalam movie which I had watched on screen with Mohanlal in the lead and I definitely would not be able to understand the references to his previous movies. But watching the film brought me feelings which I experienced while watching Petta.

Mass

The only connection between the two movies which were from different genres, directors and even language was the Super Stars who adorned the screen. In Indian Masala movies, there is a term which is used often but rarely defined - Mass. Mass is a status which most aspiring actors like to achieve. There are innumerable names who after a successful run of a dozen films try to make the transition to a Mass hero but only a few succeed. Mass is an element which represents the connection with the masses in general which only a few actors are above to achieve.

An Experience

The limitations of vocabulary negate communicating the meaning of Mass. Goosebumps is a closer term but the experience is far more intimate and meticulous to let a transparent word describe it. The experience triggers pretty much all the organ systems in the human body. The pulse and the heartbeat are certainly elevated, Adrenalin pummels through the veins, Thighs and calf muscles are gripped for a charge, Lungs though filled with air crib for, even more, the palms beat each other vigorously and the throat rains a roar.

Mass is an element which can only be experienced in the virtual world and that is possibly the reason which makes it special. The viewer, one among the masses in a screen, is able to witness something larger than life. It may or may not be in consonance with logic but undoubtedly few actors can bring it to the screen.

Oneness

There were numerous instances in both movies which elicited a feeling of oneness. It could be Rajnikanth resting the towel around his waist in his trademark style and Mohanlal placing his foot on the corrupt police officer's neck, The look Rajnikanth gives when students come late and the moment Mohanlal exits his car to walk towards the CM's body, Superstar's finesse during his fight scenes, Lalettan's use of elbow when he thrashes goons, Their over the shoulder turn around, silent killing one-liners, the  childish smile and the moment when both look directly into the camera when they address the audience.

Both Petta and Lucifer were directed by the respected fans themselves. Both Karthik Subburaj and Prithviraj Sukumaran are beloved fans of the actors. This possibly enabled them to register the feeling among the masses pretty well and the fact that they have enjoyed filming them is seen at the success of the end product.

It is not that there aren't movies which elicited the feeling of Mass which has been crudely described earlier. It is that having acted in so many movies, the two movies filled Mass with nostalgia to make it even more joyful. I wish I had more experiences like these.
