In Awe and Wonder

This was not the first time I am being introduced to the character Wonder Woman. I was pretty familiar with her from Justice League since school. And Gal Gadot was not new to the screen either. She has already made an appearance in the global franchise Fast and Furious. This wasn’t the first time when Gal Gadot was playing Wonder Woman either. She adorned the role with panache in the movie Dawn of Justice which released earlier.

She was simply reprising the role which she had done earlier. But walking out of the theater it would be hard to deny the fact you definitely saw something spectacular, or should I say wonderful. It took me a few moments to realize what had brought about that sense of awesomeness on screen. It was neither the character sketch of wonder woman nor the stellar performance of Gal Gadot alone but a symphonic fusion of both which left you with the sense of wonder.

The innocence of the superhero defined the movie. What we saw in Dawn of Justice was a superhero who has lived and understood mankind for a century. But here which is set in the final stages of World War I, we see a heroine who tries to come into terms of what is happening around her.
Innocence peppered the courageous and intelligent woman with essence. The woman who could single-handedly take on a battalion with ease, converse in every language known, asks her friend innocently, “You will take me to Ares, the God of War. I will kill him and the war will be over”. If you think that it is not cute enough try listening to it in Gal’s voice with that Middle-eastern accent.

Gal Gadot infused life into a character which was the majestic character of a woman so far on screen. Devasena in Baahubali brought to life by Anushka personified Majesty but she was incessantly aware of what is going on. That wasn’t the case with the superhero in this movie who in spite of an Earth-sized brain believes that mankind is good.

"It is not much to complain when she tears the screen drives the dagger into your chest innocently and in a soft voice mutters, “Mind if I keep your heart?”

We have seen the crooked wit of the Black Widow who uses terrific acrobatics to take down her opponents. But she was not trustworthy and reliable. Wonder woman, on the other hand, was simply incorruptible. The look in her curious painful eyes when she is not able to understand why the war wouldn’t stop and the moment she realizes that she is a God seemed to be moments reserved for Gal Gadot.

I was reading one of the comments in a review saying that Gal Gadot was born to play Wonder Woman. Yeah, and you would walk out of the theater believing that her hair was the best. Hence it is not much to complain when she tears the screen drives the dagger into your chest innocently and in a soft voice mutters, “Mind if I keep your heart?”

After the movie, I was really happy that we will get to see Wonder Woman in the DC Franchise. Musing over action movies is definitely not good as it certainly takes away your time from important issues of the day (The article on Trump’s decision to quit the Paris Climate deal will follow shortly). But you shrug your shoulders and smile saying, “Just this time. For Wonder Gal.”

A comment in a GIF pretty much summed up the feeling I had at the end of the movie. யாருப்பா இவ? இத்தன நாளா எங்க இருந்தா? (Who is she? Where was she till now?)
