Stop Celebrating Mother's Day

There is a good chance that this day could be celebrated as something important either globally or in some place on earth for honouring a person or a deed. We, humans, celebrate a lot of days, now and then. Irrespective of what we celebrate the objective has always been similar, “Remembrance”.

Most decolonised nations celebrate their Independence days to recall the brave deeds of their freedom fighters to remind the new generation of citizens that the luxury which they enjoy was earned from blood and sweat. Diabetes and cancer days have become relevant lately owing to increased prevalence of non-communicable diseases due to changing lifestyle patterns.

Days are celebrated to thank the earth, to talk much and act less on the environment and spare thought for ‘water’ one of the highly exploited resource on our planet. And ironically, the world celebrates the Valentine’s Day for remembrance of love. Most couples forget the meaning of ‘love’ few years into marriage and the Valentine is an awkward reminder that their relationship has lost the flavour over the years.

Quoting a dialogue from Unnaipol oruvan, a Tamil movie, where the protagonist says, “Amnesia, a national disease”, I will be safe to say that it applies to the globe. Our lives have become so fast that we need ‘special’ days to remind us that we need to be ‘thankful’ or ‘aware’. The celebration of the Mother’s day in this context is certainly not something to be proud of.

The fact that such things have crept into our calendar is a sad reflection of the fact that relationships with parents are slowly losing meaning. Love showered by our parents is certainly unquantifiable. No pages will suffice to enlist what parents do to enable their children to have the best of everything throughout their lives.

To commodify such emotions could help only the capitalists to make money by selling Mother’s day greeting cards. Spending some time for your mother 'every day' till her last is the best gift any child can give. Ignoring the lovable soul throughout the year and giving her a gift-wrapped box on Mother’s day is nothing less than pathetic.

It is certainly good to have days being celebrated. But at times, it is worthwhile to think why we do them in the first place. Celebrate mothers, not days and definitely don’t celebrate them on social media.

P.S. It is for Father's Day too.
